Tumpeng Recipe | Indonesian Ceremonial Rice Cone

2026-01-195 min read

Tumpeng is a cone-shaped rice mountain surrounded by dishes, served at celebrations across Indonesia. It is the ultimate symbol of gratitude and community.

Tumpeng is perhaps the most visually stunning dish in all of Indonesian cuisine - a tall cone of yellow rice (colored with turmeric) surrounded by a ring of complementary dishes. It is served at birthdays, promotions, national holidays, and any event worth celebrating.

The cone shape represents the sacred mountain (Mount Meru in Hindu cosmology, or local volcanic mountains). The yellow color symbolizes prosperity and gold. The person being honored cuts the top of the tumpeng and offers it to the most respected person present.

The rice: Cook jasmine rice with coconut milk, turmeric, lemongrass, bay leaves, and salt. Press the warm rice firmly into a cone-shaped mold (or shape by hand). Unmold onto a large platter or banana-leaf-lined tray.

The surrounding dishes vary by region but typically include: fried chicken, tempeh goreng, egg in spice paste, sauteed long beans, sambal, fried shallots, and kerupuk. Each dish represents a different flavor and texture.

While we do not typically make tumpeng in our regular cooking classes, it can be arranged as a special request for celebrations. If you are marking a birthday or anniversary during your Bali trip, a tumpeng cooking class makes an unforgettable way to celebrate.
