What to Expect at a Bali Cooking Class | First-Timer Guide
Everything first-timers need to know before booking a cooking class in Bali. What to wear, what to bring, and what you will actually do during the class.
If you have never taken a cooking class before, the idea might feel intimidating. But a Balinese cooking class is designed to be fun, relaxed, and accessible to complete beginners. Here is exactly what you can expect from start to finish.
What to wear: Comfortable, casual clothing that you do not mind getting a bit splashed. Closed-toe shoes are recommended for the kitchen. The kitchens are open-air so you will be comfortable in Bali's warm climate. Aprons are provided.
What to bring: Just yourself, your phone for photos, and maybe sunscreen (open-air kitchens). All ingredients, tools, recipes, and drinks are included in the class price. Some classes offer to email recipes if you prefer digital copies.
The typical class flow: You arrive and are welcomed with drinks and a brief introduction. The chef shows you the ingredients and explains the dishes you will cook. Then you cook - hands-on, from start to finish. The chef demonstrates each step, then guides you as you replicate it. At the end, you eat everything you cooked. Total time: 2-5 hours depending on the class.
One tip: do not eat a big meal before the class. You will be cooking 4-5 dishes and eating all of them at the end. Come hungry and you will enjoy the meal so much more. Also, the recipe booklet is genuinely useful - many students tell us they use it regularly at home.
